Travel and Local Information

The conference will be held on the Waterloo Campus of Wilfrid Laurier University, the older of the two universities located in the city. The city of Waterloo is easily reachable by air and ground transportation. Waterloo has its own international airport. The city is within one hour drive from either Toronto airport or the Hamilton airport. The ground transportation (if not renting a car) is easier from the Toronto Airport compared to the Hamilton Airport, e.g. Airways Transit is the premier provider of airport ground transportation. You can book online. Transportation from the Waterloo airport is quickest/shortest - about $30/15 minutes by taxi. Driving directions to the campus are given here and the location parking lots on campus can be seen here.

A few useful links on the area provide information on accommodation, attractions, events, etc.:

Possible trips may include (some of them can be done in the afternoon on Wednesday when a free afternoon is left for excursions, visits, etc):

  • Cultural visits: The city of Stratford located about 50 minutes from WLU is one of the "Top 10 Culture & Sightseeing Destinations in Canada" is famous for its Shakespeare Festival (follow this link for information on plays (etc) in July)

  • Outdoor excursions: Canoe/kayak paddling along the Grand River (follow this link or this outdoor/recreation page), or tubing in Elora Gorge (see the link here), or simply walking in Elora and the surrounding trails (there are some nice restaurants and the Elora festival in July offers some nice music).

  • “Historic” visits: Brantford located 45 minutes from WLU is not only the home of another campus of the university: it is also home of many heritage sites from the Bell Homestead to Iroquois or Six Nations sites (see this link for more information). Note there is also a nearby re-created longhouse in Crawford Conservation Area where you'll have an opportunity to walk along the Escarpment (see this link): this visit could be combined with a nice walk joining the site to Rattlesnake point (7.5 km). Also note The Grand River “Champion of Champions” Pow-wow will be held on July 23-24 (see further information here ).

Tours can also be organized before or after conference. For one-day tours a good contact point is here. For such tours, we recommend either of the following two travel agencies situated in the Conestoga Mall (conveniently located not far from the Waterloo Inn or Destination inn):
  • Flight Centre Conestoga Mall (contact Mr. Bruce Parkinson, bruce.parkinson at flightcentre.ca);
  • tripcentral.ca Conestoga Mall (contact Mrs. Terri Porteous, terriporteous at tripcentral.ca)

They can also suggest other exciting sites such as St Jacob, Doon Heritage Crossroads, Woodside National Historic Site, Bruce trails, Bingemins big splash, etc.

In the Visitor Guide (that can also be found in any hotel) you can check ahead which events, attractions you may wish to participate in while in Waterloo (such as the Elora music festival in July and many others).
