Analogue Signals In Quantum Environments: The Physics and Mathematics of Propagation and Control
Alexandre Zagoskin (Loughborough University), Artur Sowa (University of Saskatchewan)
The essence of quantum technologies 2.0 (QT2.0) lies in building useful
machines whose function depends on the coherent manipulation of quantum states
involving multiparticle quantum superpositions and entanglement. QT2.0
include, but are not limited to, the famous paradigm of quantum computing
aiming to circumvent some limitations of discrete algorithms. The realization
of some of the QT2.0 goals requires a design based on the non-dissipative
evolution of quantum states, and is predicated on building apparatus comprised
of a large number of unit elements characterised by long coherence times and
high degree of quantum state control. While reaching all these goals is still
outside the capacity of current experimental technologies, a plethora of
simpler, but still useful, quantum devices is feasible. Their design and
function will bear a stronger resemblance to analogue electronics, and the
processing of analogue signals.
Inspired by such a vision, we invite contributions from all areas of
Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering, which pertain to the task of quantum
state control in the presence of significant decoherence. Examples include the
design of dissipative quantum environments and theoretical analysis of such
environments; quantum metamaterials; quantum models of bio-systems and
chemical systems; and approaches to signal, image, or information processing
that either aim at applications to quantum technologies or warrant some hope
of future implementation in quantum environments.
