Minisymposium (ID: VPPO)
Variational Problems of Physical Origin
Organizers: Robert Jerrard, University of Toronto, and Andrew Lorent,
University of Cincinnati
This minisymposium will be devoted to rigorous mathematical
results on problems from the calculus of variations that are motivated by
applications to physical models. Physical problems that
will be considered are likely to include descriptions of vortices in
superconductors and superfluids, as modelled by the Ginzburg-Landau and
Gross-Pitaevskii functionals respectively; problems related to nonlinear
elasticity, including rigidity in multiwell elasticity and the elastic
behaviour of thin films; and behaviour of diblock copolymers and related
variational models involving nonlocal perturbations of the perimeter
functional.
